"Belisama"? What?

"Belisama: in Celtic polytheism, Belisama was a goddess worshipped in Gaul."

"The actual names Belenus and Belisama may come from a root 'bel', meaning 'bright' and a suffix 'isama' which means 'most' or 'greatest', which would make her the most bright, or brightest. Other scholars dispute this, and see the 'bel' in Belisama and Belenus as meaning 'strong', so Belisama would be 'The Most Powerful', which would tie in with the more martial aspect of Minerva."

What do Gallic gods and software development have in common? Not that much, so this probably needs some explaining. We blame the French. Albert and René, to be more specific. These guys.

A long time ago, at an office far, far away, my then-employer decided to take the jump and start Mac OS development. The tradition was to name each computer according to some specific theme, each OS having its own theme. The guy in charge of our UNIX/Solaris fleet knew everything about whiskey, so naturally our hosts file was filled with appropriately-named Unix servers such as Chivas, Royal, Regal, Jameson, Beam, and Highland.

For our brand-new Macs, we decided to take a more liver-friendly approach: it turned out everybody in our Mac team was a fan of Asterix, that moustached fellow who used to beat Romans for fun (fortunately only in comics). My first Mac at the office (a Quadra 800, IIRC) was christened after him, and the bulky Mac OS -based development server became (of course) Obelix.

As our Mac fleet grew, we soon ran out of Asterix-related persons. The next obvious step was to move on to the pantheon of our beloved Gauls: Teutates, Belenos and so on. And when the list of Gallic gods was depleted, the Roman ones were next.

Historically or businesswise, Studio Belisama has no connection to the company mentioned above, but the affection to ancient divinities stuck, so here we are. Our current development server is Titan, I'm writing this text on Rhea, and our web master's tool of choice is called Dionysos. (Ok, so we're taking a Greek detour here, but so did Asterix and Obelix. To participate in the Olympics.)
